South Africa: Don’t permit rhino horn buyers!

The South African government has just issued a permit for an online auction to sell off approximately two tons of rhino horn, and there are reports that poaching has spiked since this auction was announced. Any domestic trade in rhino horn undermines enforcement and demand reduction efforts to battle wildlife trafficking in the rest of Africa, China, Viet Nam, and other Asian countries.
Please join us in urging the South African government not to issue permits to potential buyers of horn from this auction and to ban domestic trade in rhino horn because of the unacceptably high risk of unintended consequences, which threatens to fuel trafficking and poaching of more rhinos while the species is teetering on the brink of extinction.
