The cruelty behind dogfighting in Mexico
Dogs are humankind's best friends. They remain forever at our sides as our steadfastly loyal companion animals. Unfortunately, these loving pets are often subjected to the terrible cruelty of dogfighting—a spectacle that pits one dog against another. This cruel practice forces dogs to fight until they are seriously injured and often times killed.

The people behind this terrible spectacle sometimes kill the losing dog while the "winner" often dies due to injuries sustained during the fight. What is clear is that no dog truly wins where dogfighting is concerned. What's more is that police often discover drugs, guns and even murder in connection with dogfights.

There is no place for dogfighting in Mexico.

Yet, dogfighting still takes place because no federal law explicitly prohibits it. It is critical that legislators in Mexico move swiftly to adopt a country-wide ban on dogfighting and that they establish strong penalties for anyone associated with this blood competition.

Recently you spoke up for dogs forced to fight in the cruel spectacle of dogfighting in Mexico. Thanks to you and other animal advocates, my team and I recently handed in over 200,000 signatures calling for a federal ban on dogfighting!

Without you, the work we do to help these dogs would not be possible. We are truly overwhelmed by this level of support and are so grateful to have you on our side.

With your support on this issue, HSI has formed a strong alliance with 20 other organizations in our anti-dogfighting campaign. We have received support for the ban with backing from two members of the Justice Committee. And just last week, the local Legislative Assembly passed a reform to Mexico City's Animal Protection Bill which will issue guidelines for officials to respond to extreme cruelty cases like dogfighting.

HSI has held meetings with key officials, donated equipment and training to law enforcement to address animal cruelty cases, and established a critical route for dogfighting tips. This wouldn't have been possible without you.
